Canada Post Green Policy

On the 13th of May 2008 Canada Post launched their "green strategy". Although no single document their is a marketing campaign outlined on their website that states areas that companies and individual can assist at There is also an outlign of what canada post is doing.   

What we are doing

At Canada Post, we believe that everyone has a responsibility to the natural world. That’s why we’re not only committed to finding ways to protect the environment and minimizing our carbon footprint, but we’re also committed to providing greener options and earth-friendlier ideas for both consumers and businesses.

 
 
 

Buildings

A large portion of the Corporation’s CO2 emissions comes from its buildings. Reducing those emissions will not only benefit the environment and help reduce overall energy costs, but will also create a healthier work environment for employees. Since 2002, we have reduced emissions from Canada Post-owned buildings by eight percent.

Starting in 2008, our design process for all new buildings will use the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) framework of the Canada green-building rating system.

Fleet

We are focused on two key strategies to reduce fuel consumption and cut CO2 emissions in the near term. The first is to purchase vehicles suitable for our delivery operations that have smaller engines and are more fuel efficient. These vehicles are scheduled to replace our larger, less efficient, step vans between 2010 and 2015. The second strategy is to work with manufacturers and after-market outfitters to find viable alternative vehicles, including hybrid vehicles, that will meet our operational needs.


Commuting

The Canada Post Commuting Challenge encourages employees to find environmentally-friendly alternatives to driving to work. Since 1996, employees have travelled over 1.2 million pollution-free kilometres by walking, biking or roller-blading to work.

SmartFlow: In 2007, Canada Post introduced SmartFlow Document Management Services, a suite of electronic services that provide end-to-end bill, invoice and statement solutions—electronically and physically. SmartFlow enables our customers to respond to the growing demand from their customers for online services.

Canada Post is doing its part to protect the environment by conducting business in a socially responsible manner and by integrating environmental protection in the way we operate.

The Corporation is committed to comply with applicable environmental standards and regulations and to establishing an environmental management structure that will ensure compliance.

The Corporation is committed to the conservation of resources through the implementation of energy conservation strategies and recycling programs, and by encouraging the purchase and use of supplies that are either recycled, recyclable, reusable, renewable or otherwise environmentally sustainable.

It is also Canada Post’s policy to manage the ongoing reduction of environmental risks and issues associated with:

Asbestos
Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB’s storage and disposal)
Fuel storage tanks management
Ozone-depleting substances
Occupation of lands and buildings containing regulated substances
Acquisition and disposal of lands and buildings
Toxic substances and hazardous waste
Waste Management
Vehicles fuel consumption and idling time
Employees at all levels are responsible for complying with the Environment Policy.
